15MY Land Rover Discovery Sport Si4 SE Review

The Discovery Sport replaced the freelander in the Land Rover stable and I was lucky to take one for spin a few weeks ago.
The Discovery Sport is built on the same chassis as the Range Rover Evoque and having reviewed the Evoque previously I was really itching to see the difference between the two.
While your average Evoque is likely to see the urban jungle more the real one the Discovery Sport is the dead opposite giving you good on road performance but also good off road as well.
I did like the look of the Evoque but in my mind the Discovery Sport just takes that one step further and is in my mind one of the best 4×4’s on the market today,
specially painted in Fuji white which looked more then good xombined with the black roof, black rims, black badging and the dark privacy glass on the windows.
While outside is good on your eye’s the inside doesn’t disappoint as well, with an abundance of leather everywhere.
The ebony leather front seats are not supportive but comfortable as well even when your off road, the thick rimmed leather bound steering wheel is comfortable to hold and the perfect thickness for me.
The instrument panel is easy to read in all light and does have a digital speedo which i found extremely useful as being a European made car the dials around the opposite way to what I’m use to (the speedo is on the left) so at first I found myself looking at the rev tacho instead of the speedo.
The dash is a mix of soft touch materials and leather which again to me looked incredibly classy, the centre stack is home to the multimedia system which exceptionally easy to use. I love the way the system is setup and you can have the screen split into 4 parts one showing the sat nav info of where you are, one showing the multimedia info, one showing your phone info and then a line of buttons on left allowing you access a myriad of settings.
The sound from the 11 speaker audio system was just unreal and every song in my eclectic music collection that goes from classical to thrash metals sounded great.
Leg room and head room in the back seat was very good and there where no complaints from the kids, one thing the Disco Sport has of it’s Evoque stable mate is 3rd row seating turning it a 7 seater although we didn’t try it out I got the feeling taller people would have an issue getting in there.
Boot space was great at 981 litres which expands to 1698 litres with the middle row seats folded as well.

Under the bonnet this particular car is powered by JLR’s excellent 2.0L Si4 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine pumping out a healthy 177kW and 340Nm of torque, which means the Disco Sport can be a rather decent performer. The engine is very tractable so it will easily keep up with traffic and cruise effortlessly on the speed limit at highway speeds.
Fuel economy though I would say is not really great the week saw me averaging 11.9L/100 for my commute it is saved in part by an excellent stop/start system eco mode which does save you fuel in bumper to bumper traffic, On the highway though it’s a different story where I saw the economy dip into the 6’s on the highway.
Backing the turbo 4 is a 9 speed auto which well most of the time, there was however a few instances where it would seem to reluctent to change down a gear on hills but it is equipment with paddles shifters so down changing was easy and uneventful. I did however like how smooth the changes where.

On the road the Disco Sport handled rather well the ride was smooth and comfortable and seemed to absorb most of the bumps you get on some of Sydney’s awesome roads without transferring it into the cabin. Just about everybody that rode in it commented on how well it road.
Now the Disco is built to take some of the rough stuff as well as is fitted with Land Rover excellent Terrain Response system which has 4 settings General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud & Ruts and Sand which allow you to adjust the car to the situation now while i didn’t go to all out off road the system worked great.
What impressed me the most was just how complaint the ride was on the dirt/gravel sometimes rutted logging roads we spent the day driving around I couldn’t believe at one point I was doing 70 kph and the Disco Sport was soaking every thing up. I’ve driven other 4×4 along these roads and not many have rode this well along them.

Safety wise the Disco Sport has received a 5 star safety rating and is fitted with list of safety features as long as your arm including Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Hill Start Assist, Roll Stability Control (RSC), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Trailer Stability Control, Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), Rear Fog Lamp,Airbags Front (driver and passenger) Knee (driver), Side Curtain air bags, Child Seat ISOFIX Anchor Points, customer configurable Auto Locking and Collision Unlock System, Power Operated Child Locks.
Cruise Control (inc Active Speed Limiter),  Autonomous Emergency Braking (Forward Facing Camera. City & Urban Emergency Braking. Operates between 5-80kph providing: Forward collision warning, Collision avoidance up to a speed of 50 km/h. Collision mitigation (reduce the speed of impact) up to a speed of 80 km/h) Lane Departure Warning, Rear Parking sensors and scored bonus point s for the Rear View Camera and even more points for having optional front parking sensors.

So after a week with the Discovery Sport I came away more then impressed it’s excellent on road manners were backed up when we took if off the tarmac, it’s well equip, has a long list of standard features has an immense list of safety features is comfortable to ride in.
My only downside was the poor fuel economy around town from the turbo 4 cylinder petrol but that can be remedied by selecting the 2.2L turbo diesel.
All in all the Discovery Sport would really make a great family car specially for families that actually like to get out an explore parts of this great country outside of the city and really should be on your list if you are looking for a 4×4 or even an SUV as this well take you to a lot of places an SUV won’t.
